Studies in Islamic Law and Society
As this project started as a PhD dissertation, I express my great thanks to
my first supervisor, Birgit Krawietz, whose provided criticism and constructive
advice on writing a dissertation which is not only enjoyable for expert readers,
but also for non-expert readers. Without her suggestions, I would have ignored
the importance of an international audience. Furthermore, her comments and
suggestions on benefitting from a broader perspective beyond the boundary of
Islamic studies were most valuable. I am greatly indebted to Vincent Houben
for his patience in advising me to switch my activist writing style to a more aca-
demic one. His broad and deep knowledge of the history of Indonesia enabled
me to structure my overlapping and unsystematic knowledge and experience
of the country into a more comprehensible and well-argued dissertation. I also
thank Nico Kaptein for his generous support for my studies both at Leiden
University, the Netherlands, and at the BGSMCS, Freie Universität, Berlin,
Germany.
